- Do some form of exercise on Christmas morning. Even if it’s just a brisk walk. Do something. That way you don’t start the day off already treating it like a complete right off. You’ll also kickstart your metabolism and trigger a release of endorphins to get you in the Christmas spirit.
- Eat slow. Eat mindfully. I challenge you to be the last one to finish your plate of food. This one is especially tough because generally speaking Christmas lunch is running late, you’re starving and the food is so delicious. So it’s hard not to inhale it. Put your cutlery down every few mouthfuls and chew each mouthful at least 10 times! Enjoy the food!
- Don’t feel you have to have something of everything. There is always an abundance of food at Christmas. Once everyone in the family has brought a plate you end up with 4 roasts, 5 salads, 6 sides and lord knows how many desserts. Decide from the get go that you don’t need to try everything. You don’t need roast potatoes and potato salad. Treat it more like a restaurant menu where you get to select a couple of things.
- Avoid going back for seconds. This one is especially important if you didn’t quite manage to achieve tip number 2. It takes our brain around 20mins to realise we have had enough food. If you inhale your first plate in 10mins that full feeling wont hit until halfway through the second plate you didn’t need. You may also feel obliged to go back for seconds just from the sheer amount of food still left sitting on the table. It can be lunch tomorrow. Don’t stress.
- Alternate your drinks with a glass of water. Alcohol has a lot of sneaky calories, particularly if you like it mixed with something like Coke. Sometimes we just need the security or the distraction of having a drink in our hand. Do your liver and your future self a favour by alternating each glass of alcohol with a glass of water.
